Monday 4/23/2007: Salt Lake City's Morneau wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Justin Morneau, Salt Lake City's starting first baseman. Morneau helped his team with an average of .444 and 5 RBI in 18 at bats. Brooklyn's leftfielder Pat Burrell had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Pat pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .364 with 3 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .818.
 
Saturday 4/21/2007: Justin Morneau clubs three rockets
WORCESTER - Salt Lake City beat Worcester 9-1, but that was not the real story of the game. Justin Morneau was, as he went deep three times. A pitch from Jeff Francis in the 4th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 438 feet from home plate in right field. In the 6th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Jeff Francis. His 3rd shot, a two-run homerun off Aaron Heilman in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. Overall he got 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring three times and driving in 4 runs.
 
Friday 4/20/2007: New Hampshire's Suzuki severely injured
NEW HAMPSHIRE - New Hampshire's centerfielder Ichiro Suzuki hurt himself in the 6th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Ichiro Suzuki will miss at least 7 weeks. Suzuki was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Fractured Hip. Ichiro is hitting .283 this year, with 17 hits in 60 at bats. He has driven in 4 runs, slugging .283.
 
Monday 4/16/2007: Player of the Week honors go to Kazmir and Braun
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Scott Kazmir, one of New Hampshire's best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 2.84 while going 2-0. Ryan Braun from Vermont wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. In 25 at bats he hit .440 with 2 HR and 8 RBI. Braun has walked 2 times this year and posts a .382 OBP. While batting .358, 19 for 53, he has driven in 14 runs. He's 3rd in the National League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
 
Sunday 4/15/2007: Vermont's Bazardo severely injured
VERMONT - Vermont is without its right-hander Yorman Bazardo for at least 4 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Hunter Pence in a game against Brooklyn. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Bazardo was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Bicep Muscle. In 0 starts this year Yorman struck out 5 batters in 12 innings of work. His ERA is 4.50, his record 0-1.
 
Sunday 4/15/2007: Derek Lowe out for 6 weeks
VERMONT - When it rains, it pours. Vermont's right-hander Derek Lowe will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Brooklyn where he left the field in the 1st inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. Opposing players hit .254 against Derek this season. While posting an ERA of 2.20 he went 1-0 in 3 starts, fanning 14 and walking 2 hitters.
 
Tuesday 4/10/2007: Josh Beckett quiets Winnipeg bats with shutout
BROOKLYN - Winnipeg's hitters were dominated by Brooklyn's Josh Beckett. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 1st shutout of the season. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Beckett (1-0) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 3. Derrek Lee helped Beckett at the plate, he went 2 for 3, and collecting 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 6-0.
 
Monday 4/9/2007: Hudson and Ankiel win Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to New Hampshire's Orlando Hudson this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Orlando pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .586 with 1 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .862. Rick Ankiel from Houston wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Rick was on fire, hitting .500 with 3 HR and 10 RBI.
 
Thursday 4/5/2007: Grady Sizemore (NY) will miss 5 weeks
NEW YORK - New York's centerfielder Grady Sizemore will miss about 5 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 9th inning of the game between New York and Salt Lake City. He dove for a drive off the bat of Prince Fielder, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. Broken Ulna was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials.
 
Wednesday 4/4/2007: Kason Gabbard pitches his 1st shutout of the season
WINNIPEG - Winnipeg's left-hander Kason Gabbard will never forget this day. The 24-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Toronto on Wednesday. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Gabbard (1-0) fanned 6 and walked 4, throwing 107 pitches. The hitting star for Winnipeg was second baseman Ian Kinsler, he went 1 for 3, blasting a homerun, with 2 RBI. Winnipeg scored 8 runs on 7 hits.
 
Wednesday 4/4/2007: New Hampshire's James Loney ropes five hits
NEW ORLEANS - James Loney hits 'em where they ain't. New Orleans certainly agrees as New Hampshire's designated hitter unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. His 1st hit, off Carlos Zambrano in the 1st inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. His 2nd hit, a three-run homerun off Carlos Zambrano in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in right field. He collected singles in the 4th , in the 5th inning (one RBI) and in the 8th (one RBI). James did drive in 7 while scoring 4 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 7 hits in 14 at bats, resulting in a .500 batting average. New Hampshire improved its record to 3-1, scoring 24 runs on 24 hits.
 
Tuesday 4/3/2007: Chris Young dominates West Texas, gives up just one hit
BROOKLYN - Brooklyn's right-hander Chris Young will never forget this day. The 27-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against West Texas on Tuesday. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Young (1-0) struck out 3 and walked 2, throwing 60 of 107 pitches for strikes. Brooklyn's centerfielder Hunter Pence collected 1 hit in 3 trips to the plate, stroking a double. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Young. Brooklyn scored 1 run on 1 hits.
